Preparing Your Quilt
1. Do not baste your quilt.
2. Clip loose threads on both sides of the top and backing. Threads can show through light fabrics (varicose veins!)
3. Square both quilt top and backing.
4. Press top and backing well.
5. Backing and batting must be a minimum of 6 inches longer and wider than quilt top.
6. Identify and label top of the quilt and backing if necessary.
7. Quilt tops without borders should be stay-stitched 1/4 inch from the edge to prevent "popped" seams.
To prevent wavy or puckered borders, measure quilt center and both sides. Average and cut border to this length. Ease the quilt center to fit the border.
Pieced backings: Remove the selvages on inside seams or the seam will sag. Selvages can be left on the outside edges. Press seams to one side. Fleece backing seams should be pressed open.
Check for frayed or broken seams on old or hand stitched tops. These areas can snag in the hopping foot and cause the quilt to tear.
Sheets are generally not recommended for backing. Some are acceptable. Call for information.
Quilt should be free of all embellishments such as buttons, charms, crystals, etc.
